Crean memorial service Thursday

A public memorial service for Newport Beach philanthropist John Crean will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Crystal Cathedral, 12141 Lewis St., Garden Grove. Crean died Jan. 11 of congestive heart failure.

Crean, who was 81, was born on a farm in North Dakota and moved with his family to California as a child. He founded Fleetwood Enterprises, a motor home and manufactured housing company that became a multibillion-dollar industry leader. Known for his down-to-earth humor and boundless generosity, Crean often opened one of his two Newport Beach homes, the Village Crean, to charity events. He also made large donations to the Crystal Cathedral, Hoag Hospital, the Orange County GOP and a long list of charities.

Crean is survived by his wife of 58 years, Donna; their four children, Andy, Johnnie, Emily and Susie; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

At the service, eulogies will be delivered by Crystal Cathedral Pastor Robert H. Schuller and other longtime friends Stan Freberg, Jim Doti, Clancy Imislund and Elden Smith. A 10-minute graveside service and reception will follow the main funeral service.

The family requests donations to the Children’s Bureau of Southern California rather than flowers. For information, go to www.hotrange.com.
