One of the five people injured Sunday in a head-on traffic collision in West Costa Mesa has died, a spokeswoman for the Orange County Coroner said Monday.
Facundo Vieyra-Jacuinde, a 59-year-old Costa Mesa resident, died at 2:08 p.m. Monday at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana.
The cause of death was listed as blunt-force trauma to the torso. The coroner’s office notified Vieyra-Jacuinde’s family on Monday.
Kelly Crawford, the supervising deputy coroner, said she did not know the condition of the other four people involved in the accident.
“This is the only death we know of,” she said.
At 4:43 p.m. on Sunday, two cars — a sport-utility vehicle and a Subaru sedan — collided head-on at the intersection of West Wilson Street and Monrovia Avenue. Both vehicles were totaled in the accident.
Of the drivers and three passengers involved, two were taken to Western Medical Center, while the other three went to UCI Medical Center and Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach with more minor injuries.
Vieyra-Jacuinde had been a passenger in the car, Crawford said.
On Sunday, Costa Mesa police officers said they did not believe that alcohol or speed had been factors in the crash.
Sgt. Bob Phillips said Monday that the investigation of the case was still open.
