Head-on crash sends 5 people to hospital

Five people involved in a head-on crash in Costa Mesa were taken to the hospital, having suffered a number of injuries, police said.
At 4:43 p.m. a sport-utility vehicle and a Subaru sedan collided at the intersection of Monrovia Avenue and West Wilson Street, police said.
The driver of the SUV sustained chest injuries, while one passenger suffered head trauma, they were both taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana. A second passenger was taken to UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange for knee injuries. The Subaru’s driver and passenger received minor injuries and were treated at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach.
Both vehicles were totaled, police said.
“At this time alcohol and speed are not a factor,” Sgt. Victor Bakkila said.
