KONA, Hawaii — Lindsay Anderson led the Sailors with nine points in Newport’s loss in the third-place game of the World Youth Basketball Tournament at the Kekuaokolani Recreation Center in Kona, Hawaii Saturday.
The Sailors’ demise was their free-throw shooting. They shot 7 for 21 from the foul line, including zero for eight in the fourth quarter. Also, starting point guard Ivy Melo went out with a head injury with about four minutes left, Newport Coach Jennifer Thompson said. Thompson said Melo is fine, but was in pain after attempting to take a charge. She didn’t get the call and the back of her head hit the ground hard, Thompson said.
Newport Harbor returns to action Thursday at 7 p.m., when they open Sunset League play at home against Edison.
