SLAMMERS WIN THREE
The Newport Beach based Slammers Futbol Club girls under-13 team recently completed a noteworthy sweep winning their league championship, the San Diego Surf Cup championship, and the Coast Soccer League Cup title.
Local players included former Daily Pilot Cup participants defender Allyson Brahs and goalkeeper Sarah Cox of Harbor Day School, as well midfielder/forward Megan Khademi from Ensign Intermediate.
WILSON LEADS CDM
Corona del Mar High senior Kate Wilson won her division and was named Varsity High Point Rider on Dec. 9 at the fourth Interscholastic Equestrian Competition (IEL) horse show of the season. The event was held at The Oaks in San Juan Capistrano.
She also won the Varsity IEL Medal on her horse Flexton and is now qualified her to ride for the year-end championship on Jan. 14. Sophomore Jenny Madden, who finished sixth, moved up to a level at the show and won her first class in her division.
Caitlin Dick, who also took sixth in her division, and Caitlin Larkins, who finished seventh, also performed well.
Novice riders Madeline Golden (fifth), Danica Kohut (seventh), and Olivia Smith (second) combined to win the Novice division.
The freshman division with riders Annie King (17th) and Sofia Zubi (15th) proved to be very competitive with King taking fourth in an event and Zubi placing second in a different event.
PATTERSON HELPS IN WIN
ST. MARY’S, Md. — Adrienne Patterson of Newport Beach helped lead the St. Mary’s College of Maryland women’s sailing team to a victory in the Atlantic Coast Championship last week.
Patterson is one of three sailors on the Division A team.
The Seahawks are ranked No. 1 by “Sailing World” magazine, defeating perennial sailing powers Yale, Harvard, Georgetown and the U.S. Naval Academy at the event.
UCI EARNS HONORS
IRVINE — Nineteen UC Irvine fall-sport athletes earned Big West All-Academic honors.
Christina Gorospe, Kathleen Lemieux, Erin Henry, Alex Fries and Frankee Kelly won from the women’s soccer team. Men’s soccer players Joel Baker and Rudy Mondragon along with women’s cross country runners Samantha Costantini, Elaine Gillespie, Erinn Kim, Candice Proctor and Jamie Schwab were honored.
Men’s cross country runners Ricky Barnes, Russel Bush, Matt Grilli, Sky Johnston, George Morris, Nick Mosey and Rusty Whisman won as well.
HALL OF FAME COMING
The California Sports Hall of Fame is set to induct its first class on Jan. 28, 2007. The Induction Dinner, held at the Hilton Anaheim at 5 p.m., will honor 20 legendary California athletes. Some of the memorable Southern California inductees will be Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Marcus Allen and John Wooden.
The Hall of Fame is located in Rancho Cucamonga but has plans to build a California Sports Museum in Irvine.
Tickets for the Induction Dinner can be purchased as individual seats starting at $500 dollars or entire tables that include sponsorship benefits and advertising.
Former Kansas City Chiefs running back Christian Okoye founded the CSHOF to honor the exemplary athletes and sports history of California.
