Breakers continue to roll, post pair of victories

The Laguna Beach High boys’ basketball team opened play Monday in the Garden Grove Tournament and posted a 60-44 victory over Sunny Hills.

Guard Cheyne Martin poured in a game-high 33 points and Brian Delino scored 12 for the Breakers, who won for the sixth time in their first seven games of the season.

“We didn’t play real crisp, but we hope to play well tonight against Garden Grove,” Laguna Coach Bret Fleming said.

The Breakers then took on host Garden Grove on Wednesday, posting another easy win, 68-34.

Laguna prepped for the tournament by blasting visiting Sage Hill, 80-33, at Dugger Gym on Dec. 8.

Martin again paved the way for Laguna with 29 points, eight rebounds, five steals and four assists. Delino, whom Fleming said had his “best game” of the season, finished with 25 points, six rebounds and four assists. Ryan Lawler pulled down nine rebounds.

“The whole team played well and it was an opportunity to play everyone,” Fleming said.

Laguna began play in the Segerstrom Tournament on Monday and suffered a 59-24 loss to Laguna Hills. Sophomore guard Katie Daff scored nine points and sophomore forward Dana Weaver had 10 rebounds.

“We’re very young and inexperienced but from our first game to this last one we played, we’ve improved in a lot of areas,” Laguna first-year coach Keith Clarkson said. “We’re still learning. This is a growing curve for us.”
