Runner honored at college level
Former Laguna Beach High cross-country standout Max Mullender, , a 2006 graduate of Laguna Beach, has been awarded the title of California Collegiate Athletic Assn. Freshman of the Year after he helped guide UC San Diego to a third-place finish at the conference men’s cross-country final at the UC San Diego campus in La Jolla.
Mullender, an all-CIF and league champion during his career at Laguna Beach High, finished sixth, overall, with a time of 26.28.40. He was the top runner on the day for the Tritons.
The top 15 finishers at the event received All-CCAA honors.
UC San Diego finished third in the team standings behind Chico State — which won its fifth-straight men’s conference title — and Cal Poly Pomona.
