NEWPORT MESA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT PREVIEW

Here are some items the board will consider tonight:

MEASURE F BONDSAlmost exactly one year after voters passed the $282-million Measure F school bond, the district is seeking to sell the first batch of bonds. Tonight, the board is seeking a resolution of issuance to sell up to $75 million in bonds in December. The resolution would request the Orange County Board of Supervisors to issue and sell the bonds.

Earlier this year, the district assembled a list of initial Measure F projects, including a stadium at Estancia High School, a gym at TeWinkle Middle School, elementary school science classrooms and a renovation of Robins Hall at Newport Harbor High School. The price tag on the list was $60 million, but the district is shooting higher now in cost.

WHAT TO EXPECT

With Measure F the talk of Newport-Mesa over the last year, there should be little difficulty getting the bonds sold. Board President David Brooks said that if the project list grew longer at $75 million, it would be up to the equity and citizens’ oversight committees to determine where to allot the added funds.

NEW COUNSELORSA recently passed assembly bill provided financial support for new school counselors across the state. Newport-Mesa is seeking to add eight new counselors at its secondary campuses, with one new counselor each at Corona del Mar, Costa Mesa, Newport Harbor and Estancia high schools; TeWinkle, Corona del Mar and Costa Mesa middle schools; and Ensign Intermediate School.

WHAT TO EXPECT

With the state paying all the hiring costs and Newport-Mesa’s counselors working with hundreds of students each, the recommendation should pass easily.

RETIRING EMPLOYEESAt a 5:30 p.m. reception, the district will recognize 18 outgoing employees. Honored in the courtyard will be teachers Mary Anderson, Sally Davenport, Scottia Evans, Claire Fanarof, Connie Minyard, Gretchen Peterson, Deidra Sanard, Jody Terry and Janice Trujillo, secondary education secretary Norma Crosby, and staffers Pat Alsop, Grace Baudot, Robert Kelley, Luis Lagunas, Basilio Martinez, John Mauck, David Whisler and Donna Woodruff.
