Costa Mesa Mustangs 6, Hacienda/La Puente Red Monarchs 6: The first quarter of the game started out with a bang for the Costa Mesa Mustangs with their defense holding the Hacienda Red Monarchs to two three-and-out drives. The Mustang office started to pick up its gallop as Joey Hanson ran a left sweep, good for 20 yards down to the Red Monarch 15-yard line. Two plays later, Ben Robinson was in the end zone off of a reverse sweep that left the Red Monarchs diving for ankles, but the Mustangs couldn’t convert the point-after.
There was no score in the second quarter as both defenses toughened up. With some stellar defensive plays by the Mustangs’ Steve Kipp, Wyatt Ferris, Oliver Ferris, Joey Hanson, Eric Hanson and Derrick Atencio, the half ended at 6-0 in favor of the Mustangs.
The third quarter started out much like the first quarter, with Costa Mesa driving for what appeared to be a scoring drive, but their drive was halted by the Monarchs. The Monarch punt-receiver muffed the punt, however, and Hanson fell on the ball at midfield.
The Mustangs held the Monarchs to virtually no offense until midway through the fourth quarter, when they capitalized on some sleepy defense with a 90-yard catch and run from one of the Monarchs wide receivers. The Monarchs extra point attempt was stuffed and the game was tied at 6-6. Wyatt Ferris added an interception for the Mustangs as the game ended in a tie.

Newport-Mesa Seahawks 19, Inglewood 8: The Seahawks (5-3, 4-2 in the division) were led on offense by quarterback Chase Forrest and receivers Chris Johnstone, who had a four-yard touchdown reception, and Levi Stillman, who caught a 65-yarder late in the fourth quarter to set up the last scoring opportunity. Max Meisenheimer, Taro Doone, Alex Losoya, Bronson Gilbert and Colby Koste led the tough rushing attack by Kory Cablay, Kurt Walde and Jeff Carlyle. Troy Reese, Rafael Corvera, Luke Burnicle, Daemon Kane, Devin Magana, Victor Valladares, Taylor Parks, Christian Abbey, Blake Bowie and JP Pilz also contributed on offense.
Forrest hit Johnstone on the four-yard score in the third-quarter, with Parks converting the two-point conversion in the third quarter to cut the lead to 19-8.
But the Seahawks couldn’t find the end zone the remainder of the game, despite having two other scoring opportunities in the fourth.
First, a would-be 35-yard Carlyle touchdown run was called back on a block-in-the-back call.
Then, Stillman’s 65-yard reception from Forrest put the Seahawks in the red zone with time running out, but the drive stalled on the two-yard line.
Cablay and Farthing recovered an onside kick a piece as the Seahawks shined on special teams.
The Seahawks’ defense, fronted by Kenny Drinnon, Kyle Benter, Todd Jarvis, Cayman Carter, Garrett Farthing, Adrian Marin and Dylan Rand-Luby, stopped the high powered Jet offense and limited them to only two first downs in the second half.
