EDITORIAL:If you can’t watch what you heat ...

“Watch what you heat!” That’s the mantra for Fire Prevention Week, which starts Sunday.

Coming on the heels of a potentially dangerous house fire Monday in Temple Hills, this is a timely warning from our local fire fighters.

The emphasis for this year’s observance is on the kitchen, where more fires start than any other place in the home, firefighters say.

Laguna Beach firefighters are urging community members to take steps to make sure homes and businesses are fire safe.

It always bears repeating that:

  • Smoke detectors in working order should be installed on every level, mounted high on walls and ceilings, and the batteries replaced at least once a year;

  • Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years or when you move to a new home;

  • A home fire escape plan should be in place, and all family members, young and old, should practice it at least twice a year;

  • Back to the kitchen: Never leave food cooking on the stovetop unattended, and always keep a close eye on food cooking in the oven;

  • Space heaters need plenty of space — at least three feet away from anything that could burn — and should never be left unattended;

  • In Laguna, the area around homes is equally prone to fire, so brush should be cleared around property.

    • Fire season is upon us and Santa Ana winds can be expected to blow in over the next few months, so now is the optimal time to take simple steps to keep fires at bay.
