The National Science Foundation has awarded UC Irvine $2.9 million to start a multidisciplinary science program, known as LifeChips, which would last for five years and support a total of 30 graduate students.
The program, which officially began on July 15, will combine engineering, physical sciences, biology and medicine to create human health technologies. The campus is currently recruiting students, who will receive a $30,000-per-year stipend for their work.
The grant, funded by the Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship program, is the first such honor that UCI has ever received from the National Science Foundation.
“By focusing on training a new group of cross-disciplinary students, our program will encourage development in this under-explored scientific and engineering frontier,” said G. P. Li, the UCI professor who heads the LifeChips program, in a release.
