Showcase set today

Seven Newport-Mesa area high school baseball players are slated to compete in the 10th annual Showcase of Players in Ryan Lemmon Stadium at Windrow Park in Irvine today.

The event features two baseball games and a home run derby. The day starts at 1 p.m. with a game between the top senior players in the Sea View League and the Pacific Coast League.

The home run derby follows, with the top two home run hitters from each league competing. The day concludes with the second game at 4:30 p.m. featuring the Century League against the South Coast League.

Slated to compete for the Pacific Coast League are Corona del Mar High representatives Matt Hauser, Ryan Lance, Eric Eadington and R.J. Duernberger.

Corona del Mar Coach John Emme will serve as one of the squad’s seven coaches.

Lance batted .346 for the Sea Kings this season with one home run and 16 RBIs and Duernberger hit .318 with 13 RBIs.

Eadington was 4-3 with a 1.80 ERA. The senior left-hander fanned 98 in 58. 1/3 innings. Hauser was 5-2 with an ERA of 1.94 for Corona del Mar (17-9).

Scheduled to play for the Sea View League are Newport Harbor High representatives Skyler Cozad, Tyler Parker and Chris Thompson.

Newport Harbor High Coach Evan Chalmers is slated to serve as one of the team’s six coaches.

Cozad batted .315 with one home run and 11 RBIs while playing a steady center field for the Sailors.

Thompson batted .279 while playing a stellar second base.

Parker was 3-3 with an ERA of 2.35 and had 35 strikeouts in 35 2/3 innings for Newport Harbor (13-12).
