Cast a ballot in plane view

John Wayne Airport on Monday began offering early voting to Orange County residents casting ballots for the June 6 primary. Early voting will be available until June 2.

In past years, voters have cast ballots before election day at city halls and some shopping malls. The Orange County Registrar of Voters introduced early voting at the airport for the November 2004 general election.

This time around voting machines have been set up in two spots, both in the passenger-only areas of terminals A and B. Besides ticketed passengers, early voting also is open to airport employees and business tenants. Prospective voters who are not yet registered or who have changed their address or political party must file information with the registrar before they can vote.

The June 6 election is a primary for statewide and federal offices such as the state Assembly and U.S. House, and it is the sole election for a number of nonpartisan offices including three Orange County supervisor seats and the Orange County Sheriff. The election also is the run-off for 35th District state Senate candidates Larry Caballero, a Democrat, and Republican Tom Harman, their parties’ winners in an April 11 special primary.

Early voting also is available through June 2 at eight shopping malls and city halls around Orange County, but the airport is the only Newport-Mesa site.

For more information on early voting or the June 6 ballot, call the registrar’s office at (714) 567-7600 or visit www.ocvote.com.
