Integrity is one of the things that is difficult to find in public office, by either an elected or appointed official. I commend both Commissioner Wendy Leece and Commissioner Mark Harris for voting against a very popular field-lighting issue for only one reason: The city of Costa Mesa made a promise to the residents adjacent to the fields that only two of the fields would be lighted, and to go back on that promise would be unprincipled.

The promise was not in writing, but the city gave its word via representatives at several neighborhood meetings. The fact that it affects only “a handful of residents,” as was stated at the last parks meeting, does not mean that it was not a promise to the residents. Because it was not in writing does not make it any less of a commitment.

If Costa Mesa goes back on its word to these residents, who will believe the officials at the next neighborhood meeting?
