TORRANCE ? The Estancia High boys’ tennis team escaped with a CIF Southern Section Division V second-round victory over Torrance on Saturday.
The teams tied, 9-9, in sets, with the Eagles winning on games, 82-76.
Eagles Coach Rachel De Los Santos said it was the first time Estancia had advanced to the quarterfinals in at least 10 seasons.
Bradley Fisher led Estancia (17-2), by sweeping his singles sets. Among his wins was a 7-5 victory over Keith Boggero, Torrance’s No. 1 singles player who was playing No. 2 in the match.
De Los Santos praised the play of the Eagles’ doubles teams.
“The losses they had were so close,” De Los Santos said. “Two tiebreakers, two 6-4 sets and a 7-5. Each of those teams contributed. They really made up for some of the low scores we had in singles today.
Estancia will face No. 1 seeded Cate in the quarterfinals on Tuesday at a site to be determined by coin flip.
