BACK IN TOWN
Former UC Irvine assistant athletic director Zack Wallace has been named the president of the new Anaheim team in the National Basketball Development League.
Wallace was the Associate Athletic Director for Development at Cal State Bakersfield. He worked at UCI from four years, starting at the assistant director of marketing and promotions.
Newport Beach residents Roy Englebrecht and John Younesi are part of the ownership group for the team, which will open play at the Anaheim Convention Center in November.
PIRATES’ BOOTY
Orange Coast College’s Lance Gonzales was named the Orange Empire Conference’s Field Athlete of the Year after the conference track and field finals last weekend.
Gonzales won conference titles in the decathlon and high jump, and had top-five finishes in the triple jump, 110-meter high hurdles, javelin and long jump.
Chris Burbach broke the school record in the discus throw, putting a winning mark of 204 feet, 1 inch that was the best in the state this year.
Coach John Knox was selected as the conference’s men’s coach of the year.
MORE HONORS FOR SWANSON
UC Irvine’s Glenn Swanson was chosen the Player of the Week by CollegeBaseballInsider.com and by the College Baseball Foundation.
The senior left-hander threw a no-hitter against the University of San Diego, striking out 14 and walking one. Five days later, he picked up the win against UC Davis in a nonconference game.
Swanson had already been tabbed as the national Player of the Week by the Big West Conference and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.
