Tars, Eagles swing away

SANTA BARBARA ? The Newport Harbor High boys’ volleyball team won two matches and advanced to the semifinals of the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions on Friday at Santa Barbara High.
Estancia went 1-1 on Friday and will vie for fifth-place in the tournament today.
The Sailors (18-6) swept Rocklin, 25-11, 25-7, 25-12, in their first match, led by Kyle Caldwell’s six kills. In the quarterfinals, Newport Harbor defeated Dos Pueblos, 25-20, 25-23, 25-21, behind Weston Dunlap’s seven kills and Ted Slater’s 35 assists and three blocks. Caldwell and Brett Auer added six kills apiece.
Newport Harbor, seeded No. 3 in the tournament and ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section Division I, will meet No. 2 seed Santa Barbara in a semifinal match at 10:45 a.m. today. No. 1 seed Valencia and Thousand Oaks will meet in the other semifinal.
Estancia (8-4) rallied to defeat Long Beach Wilson, 24-26, 25-22, 25-15, 25-22, in the first round. Shaun Markley led the team with 25 digs and 10 kills. Dallas Kopp also was in double digits in kills with 10 on 19 attempts. Scott Markley had a team-high 11 kills and Jacoby Lawrence added 33 assists.
In the second round, Estancia was swept by Santa Barbara, 25-13, 25-19, 25-22. The Dons are ranked No. 3 in Division II.
Shaun Markley led the team with eight kills to go with 14 digs in the second match. Scott Markley added seven kills and Lawrence had 20 assists.
The Eagles, ranked No. 3 in Division III, will play Dos Pueblos in a fifth-place semifinal today.
