A man died Sunday night after the sports car he was driving slammed into the center median on Coast Highway, police said.
The man was westbound on Coast Highway when the black Honda sports car he was driving hit the median just west of Balboa Boulevard and Superior Avenue, took out five palm trees and landed upside down in pieces in the opposite lanes of traffic, Newport Beach Police Sgt. Chuck Freeman said. Police responded to the crash at about 7 p.m.
The unidentified man was the only one in the car. No one else was hurt. Investigators were still sorting through the details Sunday night at press time so they did not know what may have caused the crash.
Officials had to block traffic in both directions for some time after the crash.
