Sailor shares award

The accolades keep rolling in for the Newport Harbor High girls’ water polo team, which captured both the Sea View League and CIF Southern Section Division I titles this season.

Senior Leah Robertson was named the Sea View League’s co-Player of the Year. Robertson, who has signed with the University of Michigan, was a dominant two-meter defender and a superb driver and goal-scorer for the Sailors.

High-scoring seniors Kally Lucas and Calli Manderino were All-Sea View League first-team picks for Newport Harbor. Lucas, who has signed with USC, led the team in scoring and Manderino was close behind.

Goalkeeper Elizabeth Layton and senior Katie Kepner were All-Sea View League second-team selections for the Sailors. Layton made 29 saves in the Division I semifinals against Santa Margarita and held Montebello scoreless in two overtime periods in the final. Kepner was another solid scoring option for Coach Bill Barnett’s squad.

Newport Harbor, which finished the season 27-4, went undefeated in the Sea View League with a 5-0 record. The Sailors’ only losses came to Division II champion Corona del Mar, Division I semifinalist Santa Margarita and twice to Division I semifinalist Foothill.

The Sailors outscored their opponents, 60-26, in the playoffs and beat Montebello, 14-13, in overtime to win the Division I championship game.

It was their second CIF title in the last three seasons and third in eight years.
