Anteaters tame ‘Cats

TUCSON, Ariz. ? The UC Irvine baseball team scored six runs in the eighth inning to extend a 1-0 lead and earn a 7-1 nonconference victory over Arizona in the second game of a two-game series on Sunday.
Taylor Holiday and Jaime Martinez had two RBIs apiece for the Anteaters (18-10), whose three pitchers were all effective.
Starter Scott Gorgen threw 4 2/3 scoreless innings, giving up four hits and striking out five, while Glenn Swanson struck out three in 1 1/3 relief innings to get the win.
Blair Erickson worked the final three innings for his ninth save this season. He struck out three.
Matt Morris went 3 for 5 to pace UCI’s 15-hit attack.
Coach Dave Serrano’s Anteaters will open Big West Conference play with the first of a three-game series against Long Beach State on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Blair Field.
Arizona, which won the first game on Friday, fell to 11-12.
