Taylor wins two at Surf City

HUNTINGTON BEACH ? Newport Harbor High senior Bo Taylor won the boys’ shot put and discus throw competitions at the Surf City Invitational on Saturday at Huntington Beach High.

His mark of 197 feet, 11 inches in the discus was another personal best and Sailor throwing coach Tony Ciarelli said it is among the top five marks in Orange County history.

Taylor’s winning mark in the shot was 56-11.

Senior Kenny Rakestraw was sixth in the 3,200 meters (9 minutes, 40 seconds), which was a personal record.

Rakestraw’s time of 4:27 in the 1,600 was also a PR, though he did not place. Sailors Coach Noel Kay said Rakestraw’s 1,600 was one of his best races ever.

For Sage Hill, Zach Chandy won the boys’ 800 meters in a time of 1:56.33. Blaine Bolus had three top 10 finishes ? eighth in the high jump (6-0), ninth in the triple jump (42-6) and 10th in the long jump (21-3).

Connor Rose placed fifth in the frosh-soph 800 meters with a mark of 2:05.63.

Newport Harbor finished eighth in the boys’ varsity competition, with Sage Hill taking 21st.
