Soccer girls honored

The Southern California Soccer Coaches’ Assn. announced its All-CIF Southern Section boys’ and girls’ teams Tuesday, and while all Newport-Mesa area boys’ soccer players were overlooked, seven local girls were honored.

The Costa Mesa High and Sage Hill School girls’ soccer teams each had three All-CIF selections and Corona del Mar had one.

Costa Mesa went undefeated in the Golden West League and reached the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division III playoffs before suffering a four-overtime loss to Bonita.

Mustangs’ senior forward Jasmin Day was a first-team Division III selection, while senior forward Kyla Flores was a second-team pick and junior defender Caitlyn Duffy was a third-team selection.

Day and Flores, along with Sharon Frazier, formed a fearsome trio on offense for the Mustangs (17-4-2). Duffy was a tenacious defender who helped keep opponents’ offenses at bay.

Sage Hill took second place in the Academy League behind nemesis St. Margaret’s, then made a run to the Division VI quarterfinals. The Lightning (19-4-1) beat Tarbut V’Torah, 4-1, in the first round and Oakwood, 7-0, in the quarterfinals before falling to Maranatha, 2-1, in the semifinals.

Sophomore forward Kellee Kim, who had two goals and two assists against Oakwood and Sage Hill’s only goal against Maranatha, was a Division VI first-team selection along with teammate Kelsey Rose, a senior defender who helped hold opponents to three goals in three playoff games.

Junior midfielder Emily Webb, who scored the go-ahead goal in Sage Hill’s first-round victory over Tarbut V’Torah, was a second-team pick for the Lightning.

Standout senior defender Phoebe Chang of the Corona del Mar High girls’ soccer team was an All-CIF Division II third-team pick. Chang helped the Sea Kings bounce back from a poor nonleague season to go 9-3 in the Pacific Coast League.

Corona del Mar lost to Chaparral, 3-1, in the first round of the CIF Division II playoffs.

The Corona del Mar, Sage Hill and Estancia boys’ soccer teams were eliminated by the time the first round of the playoffs were over, but they didn’t go easy.

The Estancia boys’ team won a Division III wild-card game and almost upset California High in the first round before losing, 1-0.

Corona del Mar nearly upset Woodbridge in a Division II first round before falling on penalty kicks.

Sage Hill lost to Oak Park in overtime, 2-1, in the first round of the Division VI playoffs.
