Nine titles on the mat

Fuga, Borden claim repeat championships as local teams lead way in Sunset League wrestling tourney.Nine local wrestlers won division titles Saturday at the Sunset League wrestling championships at Esperanza High.

Edison led the way with a league-high five champions and qualified a total of eight wrestlers for Saturday’s CIF Coastal meet.

Caesar Renteria (112 pounds), Nick Abraham (145), Brian Visnoski (171) Jake Pinkham (189) and Romney Fuga (275) all capped undefeated league seasons by winning their divisions.

It was the second consecutive heavyweight title for Fuga.

Marina had three wrestlers earn their first league titles: Michael Koehnlein (125), Shaun Lin (130) and Ben Rivera (152).

Nate Borden won a second-straight league title by winning the 160-pound class.

Previously, Edison tuned up for the league meet by taking a 69-11 victory from rival Fountain Valley.

In boys’ soccer:

In a key Sunset League battle, host Los Alamitos scored twice in the second half and went on to take a 2-0 decision from Edison.

The win clinched the league title for the Griffins.

Edison, which lost for just the second time in nine league matches -- both losses coming to the Griffins -- had a four-game winning streak snapped.

Huntington shut down Fountain Valley, 2-0, in another Sunset matchup. Forward Kyle McAthy and defender Mirai Oishi each scored for the Oilers.

Marina posted another shutout in Sunset play by downing Esperanza, 3-0. Forward Juan Meza scored twice and midfielder Chris Mackay once for the visiting Vikings.

Previously, Huntington shaded Marina, 2-1, and Edison slipped past Fountain Valley, 3-2.

McAthy and forward Christopher Sauter scored for Huntington, and forward Todd Locken scored Marina’s lone goal.

In Edison’s win, midfielders Jordan Kato and Anders Zimmerman and forward Jimmy Walker scored for the Chargers.

In girls’ soccer:

Huntington fell to Fountain Valley, 2-1, in Sunset League play. Megan Martinez scored for the Oilers.

In other Sunset games, Edison fell to Los Alamitos and Marina to Esperanza, both games ending in 1-0 scores.

In Golden West League play, Ocean View and Estancia played to a 2-2 tie. Forward Tricia Erznik and defender Mashawna Miller scored for the Seahawks.
