COUNTDOWN TO TOSHIBA
The PGA Champions Tour is off until The ACE Group Classic on Feb. 17, but a slew of players were in Maui on Monday for the Wendy’s Champions Skins Game at Wailea Golf Course.
Raymond Floyd and Dana Quigley teamed up to win the eight-player, four-team alternate shot event, with 10 skins and a tournament record $510,000. Floyd made an eight-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole to win nine of those skins and $410,000, then made a 10-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole for the remaining money.
The pair outdueled Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, who finished with eight skins and $260,000. The teams of Arnold Palmer-Peter Jacobsen and Gary Player-Hale Irwin were left out of the money.
Floyd, Quigley and Irwin are tentatively entered in the Toshiba Classic, scheduled for March 13-19 at Newport Beach Country Club.
