Sailors wrestlers claim their own tourney

hs-roundupNEWPORT BEACH -- For the first time, Newport Harbor High has won its wrestling tournament.
The Sailors defeated Orange, 50-27, in the last match of the day to capture the Newport Harbor-Corona del Mar Tournament title on Saturday.
Ryan Dickey came up with the key victory for Newport Harbor against Orange. The 160-pound sophomore trailed by one point going into the third round of his match, when he came up with a reversal and a pin. The victory put the Sailors up by five points and sparked a string of four pins that secured the tournament title.
Sophomore Josh George (125 pounds) went undefeated in the tournament at 8-0, including three pins. Jose Anaya (140) went 7-1 with four pins, Bryan Bennett (215) went 7-1 with five pins, Eddie Charcas (130) was 7-1 with six pins, Craig Nordstrom (152) finished 7-1 with two pins and a technical fall, and Michael Bates went 6-2 with two pins for the Sailors.
Newport Harbor and Santa Ana Valley had 7-1 records in the tournament, but the Sailors defeated Santa Ana Valley in their head-to-head battle, 43-31. Orange finished third with a 6-2 record.
In their other Saturday matches, the Sailors defeated Gahr, 58-18, and Cypress, 57-25.
Corona del Mar finished fifth with a 4-4 record in the two-day tournament, and Estancia (2-6) took seventh in the nine-team meet.
For the Sea Kings, Bejan Ahmadi (152) finished with a perfect 8-0 record and Nick Delano (145) went 7-1.

Estancia 6, Santa Ana 2
ANAHEIM -- Taylor West scored three times as the Eagles concluded the Magnolia tournament with a victory Saturday.
Jennifer Thomas, Avery Williams and Stacy McDaniels also scored for Estancia (2-1). Madison Urtusaustegui recorded one save and Julia Tasedan made two saves in goal.
