Local wrestling tourney opens

NEWPORT BEACH -- The area high school wrestling kicked off Friday with the Corona del Mar/Newport Harbor tournament.
Newport Harbor High went 3-1 on the first day of the nine-team tournament. The Sailors defeated Corona del Mar (40-33), Estancia (48-26) and Saddleback (54-18), losing to University (54-29).
Newport Harbor was led by Josh George, Eddie Charcas and Bryan Bennett, all of whom went 4-0. Charcas, a CIF Inland Division finalist last season, recorded four pins. Bennett had three pins and a forfeit win, and George had two pins, a major decision victory, and a forfeit victory.
Corona del Mar went 2-2 in its four matches, and Estancia was 1-4.
The tournament concludes today.
BOYS’ SOCCER
Marina 3, Estancia 2
COSTA MESA -- Marina High defeated Estancia in a nonleague game Friday, dropping the Eagles to 0-2 overall.
Estancia’s Edgar Rodriguez scored in the 63rd minute, and Luis Gallerdo put one in the net in the 70th minute. Goalkeeper Marco Burcaga chipped in with five saves for the Eagles.
The first goal was scored by Marina’s Ryan Schroeder in the 10th minute. Kyle O’Brien also scored along with Jonathon Finley, who scored the game-winner in the 76th minute. Goalkeeper David Ocompo saved three shot attempts for the Vikings.
The Eagles will begin play today in the Millikan Tournament against Trabuco Hills at 7:30 a.m.
