sports briefs for MondayThe Sage Hill School girls’ volleyball team earned the No. 3 seed in the eight-team Southern California Regional of the CIF State Division IV Championships that begin Tuesday.
The Lightning (27-8), who swept St. Margaret’s to claim the CIF Southern Section Division IV-A crown Saturday, play host to No. 7-seeded The Bishop’s of La Jolla in the regional opener at 7 p.m.
The Bishop’s (23-10) lost to St. Francis in the San Diego Section Division IV final Saturday.
Tuesday’s winner will advance to meet either No. 1-seeded Marymount of Los Angeles (27-7) or No. 8-seeded Chowchilla Union (23-12) on Nov. 26.
OCC earns top seed
The unbeaten Orange Coast College women’s volleyball team is the No. 1 seed and will play host to Mount SAC when the Southern California regional playoffs begin Nov. 30.
The Orange Empire Conference champion Pirates (20-0, 14-0 in conference) have not lost a game this season.
OCC Coach Chuck Cutenese also said freshman outside hitter Kiwi Winkler, the Orange Empire Conference Most Valuable Player, has been named All-Southern California and first-team all-state.
OCC’s Mutt honored
Orange Coast College freshman Sarah Nutt was named to the all-tournament team at the state women’s water polo championships completed Saturday in Fresno. Mutt, a Newport Harbor High product, is a utility player for the Pirates.
