COSTA MESA CITY COUNCIL WRAP-UP
Here are a few items the council considered Tuesday.
BOND REFINANCING
The council unanimously voted to refinance the remaining debt from $3 million in bonds issued in 1991 to pay for improvements to the theater and arts district near the Orange County Performing Arts Center.
The bonds were sold at a 7% interest rate, and the city will get a significantly lower 5% rate through the refinancing.
The refinancing should generate $2.1 million, which the council will put toward improvements at the TeWinkle Park athletic complex.
The council voted, 4-0, to refinance the bonds. Councilwoman Linda Dixon was not present.
WHAT IT MEANS
The city will save money by getting a better interest rate on its debt, and the already budgeted money that would have paid for the TeWinkle improvements can stay in the city coffers.
POLICE STATION RENOVATIONS
In a 4-0 vote, the council agreed to proceed with renovations at the police substation on West 18th Street. Enkay Engineering of Costa Mesa will perform the work, which includes removal of materials that may contain mold or asbestos.
Employees at the police substation have worked out of trailers since earlier this year, when a report showed there may be mold or asbestos-containing materials in the facility. Mold may have been the result of a leaking roof, which has since been fixed.
WHAT IT MEANS
The city will spend $27,989 to fix air-quality issues at the West 18th Street police substation.
