Deputies catch man; he catches hypothermia.A 44-year-old La Jolla resident was treated for hypothermia after jumping into the Back Bay while fleeing from a security guard, officials reported.
Timothy Pollock, who told police he works as a jazz promoter, entered an unlocked car at the Newport Dunes Resort in order to sleep off his alcohol intoxication, Newport Beach Police Sgt. Mark Everton said. The police received a call around 3 a.m. Sunday morning from a resort security guard who reported a man inside an employee’s car.
The security officer then approached Pollock, who allegedly tried to punch the security guard and then ran away, Everton said. Pollock jumped into the water and swam out about 75 yards, Everton said, and the Orange County Sheriff’s Harbor Patrol was contacted. Although the tide was low, the Harbor Patrol was able to get a boat into the bay and pull Pollock out of the water.
“I guess his body temperature was down to 91, 92 degrees,” Everton said, adding that officials believe Pollock was in the 63-degree water for more than 30 minutes before the Harbor Patrol deputies hauled him out.
Pollock was taken to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, where he was treated for hypothermia. He is now being held at the Orange County jail on warrants from San Diego County involving the alleged receipt of stolen property, Everton said.
“Charges will be sought against him regarding the assault on the security guard,” Everton said.
