Green Chargers pull out victory

Late touchdown nets 7-0 victory over San Clemente Tritons.Winning is becoming habit for the Huntington Beach Jr. Pee Wee Division Green Chargers.

The Green Chargers earned win No. 3 in dramatic fashion, as they pulled out a last-second, 7-0 victory over the San Clemente Red Tritons in Pop Warner Football action.

A 40-yard run by Treavon Coley moved Huntington down to the Tritons’ 20-yard line late in the fourth quarter. Three plays later, Elijah Herrera bolted into the end zone for the winning touchdown.

Adam Petrarca provided the extra point.

The scoring drive was set up by an outstanding defensive stand by the Green Chargers.

San Clemente had blocked a Huntington punt and recovered the ball at the Green Chargers’ seven-yard line, but the Huntington defense, led by Coley, Herrera, Petrarca, Trevor Russell, Cody Body, Colin Kearon, Kelly Padgett, Shane Heath, Josh Frazier, Trenton Aschoff, Aaron Vargas and Joseph Del Crognale, denied the Tritons the end zone.

The shutout was the third consecutive shutout posted by the Green Chargers defense.

White Chargers 8

In a rare playoff game between two Huntington teams, the Gold Chargers held on for the victory and earned a trip to Saturday’s division Orange Bowl game.

A touchdown run by Trevor Borkowski in the second half broke a scoreless tie and gave the Gold Chargers a 6-0 lead. After the White Chargers answered that score and added the conversion to take an 8-6 lead, the White Chargers’ Steven Tovatt came up with a huge defensive play when he stripped the ball on a White Chargers’ handoff attempt and returned it 70 yards for the go-ahead score.

Huntington scored its first victory of the season by shutting down the Cowboys.

It was the Green Chargers defense that came up with the first score of the game, as Trenton Aschoff and Joseph Del Crognale combined to record a safety for a 2-0 lead.

Huntington’s offense mounted its only scoring drive in the fourth quarter as the passing and rushing of Adam Petrarca, Aaron Vargas, Elijah Herrera and Treavon Coley marched the Dolphins downfield. Petrarca took the scoring honors when he reached the end zone on a quarterback bootleg. Petrarca hit Vargas with the extra-point pass.

Shane Heath, Cody Boyd, Matthew McKenzie, Jason McLellan, Cole Jensen, Anthony Deras, Blake Hinchliff, Caleb Banks and Jared Wilson provided protection along the offensive line.

Canyon Hills mounted a late scoring threat, but it was thwarted when Petrarca came up with an interception.

Aschoff, Herrera, Del Crognale, Vargas and defensive linemen Josh Frazier, Collin Kearon, Kelly Padgett, Trevor Russell, Jared Pierce and Kevin Kimball kept the Cowboys off the scoreboard.

Green Chargers 32, Saddleback Valley 0

The Green Chargers recorded their second straight win with an impressive shutout of the Gold Bears.

Elijah Herrera scored on the first series of the game for Huntington and later scored on a 40-yard run. Treavon Coley also scored a pair of touchdowns, and Trenton Aschoff scored on a run up the middle.

Gold Chargers 20, Costa Mesa 6

Huntington found its rhythm in the second quarter of a penalty-marred game and went on to down the Mustangs in the first round of the Orange Empire Division II playoffs.

Trevor Borkowski scored all three touchdowns for the Gold Chargers.

Defensively, Borkowski, Luke Bosiljevac, Sam Doxakis and Thomas Firman each recorded quarterback sacks, Ryan Finnie had an interception and Colby Johns and Keith Butler each blocked a punt.

Pee Wee Division

Green Chargers 30,

Costa Mesa 6

The one-sided victory by Huntington advances the Green Chargers to Saturday’s divisional championship game against the Santa Margarita Titans.

Huntington raced to a 23-0 halftime lead and coasted to an impressive win in the first round of the playoffs.

Junior Midget Division

Green Chargers 18,

Canyon Hills 3

Led by tailback Justin DeValk on offense and a defense that surrendered only a field goal, Huntington improved to 8-1 and will play the undefeated Cypress Cyclones Saturday in a division semifinal game at La Habra.

Mighty Mite Division

Pasadena 34, Chargers 13

Huntington held Pasadena in check for the first half, but the host Trojans pulled away in the final two quarters.

A touchdown run by Steve Hernandez helped the Chargers make the score 13-6 at the half.

Quarterback Daylan Heirimeyer had a touchdown run in the second half for the Chargers.

Huntington, now 7-2, will play the La Mirada Blues Saturday in the Mighty Mite Bowl.

Chargers 35, Anaheim 6

An interception by Steve Hernandez woke up Huntington, which roared back in the second half to run away from the Wolfpack. Hernandez returned the interception 20 yards to the Anaheim one-yard line.

Robert Rice scored three touchdowns and Hernandez two. Chris Provost had two extra point receptions, Hernandez rushed for two extra points and Dylan Sneed rushed for an extra point to complete the scoring for the Dolphins. Provost, Mason Duffey, Chad Faas, Noah Nabors, Jared Fuga, Fran McManus and Vince Marinko opened up big holes along the offensive line in the second half.

Midget Division

Yorba Linda 26, Chargers 8

Huntington’s season came to an end with a loss to the Aztecs.

Ball control was the name of the game for Huntington, which handed Fullerton its first defeat of the season.

A fumble recovery by Woody Cash set up the first score for the Chargers, which came when Shaun McLaughlin scored on a 15-yard run. Michael Douthwaite split the uprights for two more points and an 8-0 lead.

Late in the first half, McLaughlin hit Jeff Trojan with a 60-yard touchdown pass. Stephen Andrew scored on a quarterback sneak at the start of the fourth quarter to cap the scoring for Huntington.

The Chargers ended one last scoring opportunity by Fullerton when a hit on Titans quarterback by Douthwaite forced a fumble, which was recovered by Dylan Leener.

Leener, Douthwaite, Ian North, Richard Ballesteros, Tony Maude, Dillon Petrarca, Kevin Simpson, Christian Larson, Austin Clifford, Christian Alexander, Austin Gomez and Anthony Garcia provided protection on the offensive line.
