Newport advances to semifinals

high school roundup for WedsNEWPORT BEACH -- The Newport Harbor High field hockey team advanced to the semifinals of the Los Angeles Field Hockey Assn. Tournament of Champions with a 4-0 victory over visiting Chaminade Tuesday at Harper Community Center.

Goalkeeper Jessica Pizarek tallied eight saves for the shutout, while Sasha Gruman, Rachel Foster, Robin Ibbetson and Jessica Riggio all scored goals for the Tars (26-2).

Newport Harbor, trying to reach its sixth straight title game, will play Glendora -- a 4-0 winner over Huntington Beach -- in the semifinals at a site to be determined. GIRLS’ TENNIS

Golden West League Finals

HUNTINGTON BEACH -- Estancia High freshman Ellie Edles was the singles runner-up Tuesday at Ocean View High.

Edles advances to the CIF Southern Section individual tournament Nov. 16.

Costa Mesa’s Evelyn Wallace fell to Melissa Cecil in the semifinals, while Sarah Muradian and Kritzia Tonin were third in doubles for the Eagles.

Newport Harbor def. Irvine

IRVINE -- The Sailors clinched the Sea View League title with a 25-17, 25-13, 25-20 victory over host Irvine Tuesday.

Megan Toman (12 kills) and Katie Regan (five blocks and four kills) led the Sailors.

CROSS COUNTRY

Academy League Finals

ORANGE-- Sophomore Katie McKeon won an Academy League title and led the Sage Hill School girls team to second place at Irvine Regional Park on Tuesday. McKeon finished the three-mile course in 20 minutes, 19 seconds..

Cait Williamson finished fifth in 20:54, while Aiyana Bobrownicki followed in sixth in 20:57.

McKenzie Muhannon was 10th (21:14) and Kelsey Rose (21:42) ran her career-best time.

The Sage Hill boys’ team finished second behind Whitney. Tyler Ellis was the top finisher for the Lightning in fourth place (17:16).

Sean McElroy was eighth (17:42).

Zach Chandy (17:53), Conrad Whitaker (18:27) and Connor Rose (18:35) rounded out the field for Sage.

Both Lightning teams will compete at the CIF Southern Section Division III Preliminaries on Nov. 12 at Mount SAC.

FOR THE RECORD

In Wednesday’s high school roundup, Newport Harbor High’s player at the Sea View League golf championships was misidentified, as was her score. Kendall Horn was the Sailors’ top finisher, shooting 184 over 36 holes to place 12th.
