o7Decisions and discussions from Tuesday’s Laguna Beach Unified
School District school board meeting:
f7
Absences and Excuses Policy
The school board reviewed, discussed and made modifications to its
polcies regarding absences and excuses for students.
WHAT IT MEANS
The district is cleaning up the dated language to make sure it’s
in compliance with new state regulations and guidelines.
The last update of the absences and excuses policy was adopted on
Nov. 14, 2000, and before that on Jan. 9, 1996.
The board policy subcommittee has been working on an updated
policy, which was reviewed at Tuesday’s board meeting.
The board, along with Superintendent Theresa Daem, decided the
policy needed further review and modification.
The district’s attorney will be consulted to define and clarify a
clause regarding the exact meaning of the phrase “confidential
medical services.” Daem said the policy was brought to the board for
a first reading and will be revised.
Steroid Use Ban
The school board and superintendent decided to consider adopting a
policy banning steroid use and put it on the agenda.
WHAT IT MEANS
The district will propose a policy against steroid use that
students and parents will need to sign and acknowledge before
participating in school sports.
“We don’t have a specific policy on steroid use,” board president
Jan Vickers said. However, there is a policy in place that references
substance abuse. Board member Bob Whalen said he would like to see
the policy in place before winter sports begin.
The next Laguna Beach Board of Education meeting will be at 7 p.m.
Oct. 25 at the district office. For information, call (949) 497-7700.
