Breakers no match

NEWPORT BEACH -- Last season, when the Corona del Mar High boys cross

country team faced Laguna Beach, CdM lost by one point.

This year, the Sea Kings got their revenge with a 24-33 victory

Wednesday at Bonita Creek Park.

“This was a sweet victory,” said CdM Coach Bill Sumner. “It’s good

to see the guys are coming around. They look good. We’re right where

we’re supposed to be right now.”

Junior Tim Scott, for the first time in his CdM career, finished

first for the Sea Kings (5-0) with a second overall finish in 15:45

-- four seconds behind the top-finisher.

Kenneth Wong finished third overall in 15:49, Brian Licorish and

Tommy Hutchinson finished in 16:06, Jack Turner, a key in CdM’s

invitational lineup, took eighth overall in 16:13, No. 10 overall

Ryan Guthrie finished in 16:34, and Paris Salgado was 11th overall in

16:50.

“We had a good strategy by running a mellow first mile,” Scott

said. “Halfway through, I knew we had it in the bag.”

Scott said although most don’t consider the schools big rivals, on

Wednesday, they were.

“This was an important race for us,” he said. “Last year we

weren’t that effective, but we trained hard this summer, and we’re

pretty good this year. It’s nice to take back the win.”
