Annual holiday palette contest deadline today

The arts commission is holding its annual holiday palette

competition. Artists are provided with a prepared 4-by-3-foot wooden

palette on which to paint original artwork. The completed palettes

are displayed throughout the city during the holiday season.

Proposals will be accepted from Laguna Beach residents, artists

with a studio in Laguna Beach or showing in a Laguna Beach gallery,

Laguna College students and artists exhibiting in Laguna festivals.

Artists must submit a horizontal palette design on 8

1/2-by-11-inch paper, in color, within the border of a palette

outline. The palette’s indentation must be integral to the design.

The deadline is 5 p.m. today. Entries must be delivered to

Cultural Arts Manager Sian Poeschl at City Hall, 505 Forest Ave.

Entries will be judged by the commission based on creativity and

appropriateness. Honorarium is $300 for each selected design.

Laguna Beach Film Society offers free screening

Laguna Beach Film Society’s Cinema in the Park will present a free

screening of MacGillivray Film’s “Five Summer Stories” at 7 p.m.,

Saturday, Oct. 15 outdoors at Heisler Park’s entrance to Rockpile

Beach, off Cliff Drive. Attendees are encouraged to bring beach

Final Rose Garden Series concert

Ron Kobayashi Trio will perform in the Hotel Laguna’s Rose Garden

on from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 13, closing Laguna Beach Live’s summer Rose

Garden Series at the hotel. The trio will perform classic and

contemporary jazz.

Doors open at 5 p.m., and there is a $10 cover charge. Wines by

Playhouse Moveable Feast Fundraiser

The Laguna Playhouse presents its 15th annual “A Moveable Feast”

progressive dining experience fundraiser from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Oct.

Attendees start with a champagne reception at Tivoli Terrace and

can bid on a silent auction items. Then participants enjoy two

courses at their choice from featured restaurants.

After diner, participants return to Tivoli Terrace for dessert,

jazz and final auction bidding and prize drawings. This year’s top

prize is a trip for two to New York, including airfare, hotel

accommodations, dining and tickets to a Broadway show.

This event benefits the playhouse’s annual fund. Tickets are $150

No Square presents ‘The Sound of Music’

No Square Theatre will present “The Sound of Music” Oct. 14 at 8

p.m., Oct. 15 at 2 and 8 p.m. and Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Festival

Art Museum holds its annual auction

The Laguna Art Museum will have its 23rd annual art auction from 6

to 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22. The event is one of the oldest running

museum auctions in California.

In addition to the dozens of artists who have generously donated

to the auction for many years, the museum has created a new format.

For the first time, the auction will also use a juried selection

process that invites all California artists to submit works of art to

be juried by a group of gallery owners from throughout the state.

Tickets are $125.

Oktoberfest at Tivoli Too Oct. 23

Oktoberfest will be held from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23

at Tivoli Too, 777 Laguna Canyon Road, featuring German food, beer,

wine, dancing and performances by German American Brass Band of

Southern California from 11 to 11:45 a.m. and 12:35 to 1:20 p.m.,

2:15 to 3 p.m. and 3:50 to 4:30; Golden West Pops Band from 11:45

a.m. to 12:35 p.m.; Laguna Community Concert Band from 1:20 to 2:10

p.m.; combined bands from 2:10 to 2:15 p.m., and the Orange Symphonic

Band from 3 to 3:50 p.m. Admission is $5, the German buffet is $10

Sawdust 2006 Summer Festival artist applications

Artists who have lived in Laguna Beach since November 2004 are

invited to request an application to the 2006 summer Sawdust Art

Festival.

Requests must be made in writing and should include the artist’s

full name, Laguna Beach home mailing address (no post office boxes or

mail centers), phone number and artistic medium.

Mail the request to Sawdust Art Festival, 935 Laguna Canyon Road,

Laguna Beach, CA 92651, Attn.: Summer 2006. Requests must be received

by Nov. 4.

The summer festival will run from June 30 through September 3.
