Top seeds to play for softball titles

Top-seeded teams dominated the action in the city of Laguna Beach

Community Service Department’s 16-inch slow-pitch softball playoffs.

They advance to the finals in the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday

leagues championship finals.

The only team not a top seed to reach a final was the Hotwings,

which willface Arbitech for Thursday League supremacy.

Team Viagra and Island Shade will meet for the Tuesday League

championship, and Mesa Verde Partners and the O’Leary’s Tanks will

compete for the Wednesday League crown.

Thursday League

Arbitech 9, Team Hobie 8

Arbitech survived an upset bid by No. 4 seed Team Hobie to remain

undefeated in summer play at 11-0.

Todd Pavia had three hits and three RBI and scored three runs, and

Manuel Sanchez recorded three RBI behind a double and single.

Mark Christy had a three-run home run for Team Hobie.

Compound Fractures 9, Hotwings 6

David Strong delivered a three-run home run in the fifth inning as

the No. 4 seed Compound Fractures dropped the No. 3 seed Hotwings

into the loser’s bracket.

Strong earlier had an RBI single, and teammates Ryan Focker and

Erik Nelson each had a home run.

Jonathan Cohen had a pair of home runs, two singles and four RBI,

and Trigg Garner singled three times to lead the Hotwings on offense.

Hotwings 10, Team Hobie 9 In an elimination game, Hotwings stayed alive by rallying from a

6-2 deficit as Team Hobie suffered another tough one-run loss.

Jonathan Cohen again was one of the hitting leaders for the

Hotwings, with a home run and two singles. Leadoff batter Shawn

MacGillvary had a big game with a home run, a double and two singles,

Trigg Garner nailed a three-run home run and a single, and Paul

Wolsey had a two-run home run and two singles.

Seven Team Hobie batters finished with two hits, led by Mark

Christy, who hit a solo home run and a single, and Ryan Aikens and

Paul Corey, who each doubled and singled.

Tuesday League

Team Viagra 5, Ganahl Lumber 2

Top-seed Team Viagra, which played Ganahl Lumber to a 3-3 tie

during regular season play, got back-to-back home runs in the first

inning from Nat Pivaroff and Keith Mulvaney.

Bill Brown homered in the third inning to decide the game.

Greg Wallace doubled and singled for Ganahl Lumber.

Island Shade 13, Sandpiper 7

Coby Ness knocked out a pair of two-run home runs as Island Shade

dropped defending league champion Sandpiper into the loser’s bracket.

Mike Burns homered and doubled, Doug Mauro tripled and doubled,

and Andy Bunn doubled and singled twice for the winners.

Ryan Neptune came up with two solo home runs and three singles,

Sean Bill homered twice and singled, and Jeff Heminghaus had three

singles to lead Sandpiper.

Sandpiper 11, Ganahl Lumber 3

Sandpiper rolled as Mickey Allen homered and had two singles, and

Jeff Heminghaus had three singles.

Robert Ponce singled twice for Ganahl Lumber.

Monday League

The league’s postseason tournament begins Monday with Courtesy

Auto Body, Puswatrkylegs, Rotary and Pancakes carrying the top four

seeds.

Courtesy Auto Body 15, DUI Fighters 8

Scott Bakkum tripled and doubled to drive in six runs as Courtesy

Auto Body won its ninth straight game to lock up the league’s top

playoff seed.

Paul Corey homered and singled and Chris Ornelas had three

singles.

The DUI Fighters got a home run and two singles from Mica Brown

and a home run and single from Josh Stock.

Puswatrkylegs 5, Rotary 3

The Puswatrkylegs overcame a two-run deficit by scoring four runs

in the top of the seventh inning to win for the sixth time in seven

starts.

Ryan Schissler had a three-run home run to decide the outcome in

the seventh, his blast following back-to-back doubles by Brent

Reynard and Jesse Westgaard.

Westgaard knocked in a run with his double.

Troy Medley singled twice for Rotary.

Pancakes 5, Forty Majority 5

Steve Hester had a three-run home run as Forty Majority wiped out

a 4-0 deficit to earn a tie.

Consecutive home runs in the second inning by Adam Dal Porto, Matt

Thorne and Brady Michel gave the Pancakes a 4-0 lead.
