GIRLS BASKETBALL
Signups are still open for Newport Beach and Costa Mesa girls in
third through eighth grades for Newport-Mesa National Junior
Basketball. Online signups and other information are available at
www.newportmesanjb.org. It is anticipated that the leagues will sell
out. Signups are on a limited basis.
SOCCER
AYSO Region 120
Girls under 10
Scorpions 2, Killer Bees 1: The Scorpions played and won their
first game of the year, 2-1, over the Killer Bees on Saturday
morning. The Scorpions were led by goalkeeper Jordan Page, defenders
Kyra Page, Mary Garza and Crystal Zamora held the Bees scoreless in
the second half. On offense, Judith Gonzalez maneuvered through the
defense and scored the equalizer early in the second half. Claudia
Huerta, assisted by Amy Heil’s free kick, angled a shot in the corner
to provide the game-winning goal. The Scorpions were supported by
strong efforts on both offense and defense by Dominique Beltran,
Daniella Amador, and Olivia LeValley.
Retros 7, Pepperoni 0: The Retros’ high-powered offense came on
strong for its second win of the season, 7-0, over the Pepperoni. The
goal scoring was led by Kelsey Asher, Dominique Hernandez, Gabey
Suarez, Alexa Smith, and Teeny Cathey scoring three goals.
Goalkeepers Bree Le Bare, Alexa Smith, Bailey Henderson, and Kelsey
Asher were able to keep many Pepperoni shots out of goal. Brittany
Grimmett, Connie Garcia, and Mariella Solorio led the outstanding
Retros’ defense. The midfield, played by Yazmin Lopez, Karina
Pasillas, and Rachel Mohammed, provided great support play.
Coast Soccer League
Girls under 10
Irvine Lasers 2, West Coast United 1: The Lasers held United to
only one goal, Tara Terpening made many saves in the net only
allowing one goal. Alexis Muniz and Madison Glaser had goals for the
Lasers. Caroline Famiglietti notched an assist on a corner kick that
led to the second goal. Grayson Galbraith shined in the midfield with
many tackles and passes to push the ball up the field. Gabby
Caporicci, Maren Martinez, Janna Purcell, Francesca Ricapito,
Samantha Sandzimier, Courtney Lang, and Noelle Gooding all played key
roles in the victory.
San Diego Forest Cup: The Lasers advanced to the Semifinals. In
the opening game, the Lasers tied Albion SC White, 1-1. Madison
Glaser scored the sole Laser goal.
In the semifinal game, the Laser girls fell to the eventual
champion Poway Vaqueros-Willrich, 1-0 in a physical match. Samantha
Sandzimier had an outstanding weekend with many tackles. Tara
Terpening and Grayson Galbraith handled the goalkeeping. Janna
Purcell, Francesca Ricapito and Courtney Lang executed the defensive
triangle. The Laser offense was made up of Caroline Famiglietti,
Madison Glaser, Gabriella Caporicci, Maren Martinez, Alexis Muniz,
and Noelle Gooding.
Girls under 9
Irvine Lasers 5, So Cal Blues 0: The Lasers won their second
league game, putting pressure on the Blues the entire game. Goals
where scored by Anna Chin, Brianna Westrup, Brynn Motal, and Hailey
Hite. Goalkeepers Nicholle Frei and Katie Craig did a fantastic job
at net, allowing any balls to get through. Karina Mickelson, Emily
Martinez, Iola Favell, Loren Littlefield, and Lauren Smith all
contributed to the win.
San Diego Forest Cup: The Lasers won the San Diego second annual
Forest Cup. Emily Martinez, Katie Craig, Anna Chin, Brianna Westrup
and Brynn Motal, Loren Littlefield and Hailey Hite scored goals.
Goalkeepers Nicholle Frei and Katie Craig did fantastic jobs in the
net, allowing only one goal for the tournament. The defense,
featuring Brianna Westrup, Karina Mickelson, Nicholle Frei and Emily
Martinez, kept their opponents in the defense half of the field the
entire tournament. Anna Chin, Iola Favell, Loren Littlefield, Katie
Craig, Brynn Motal and Hailey Hite were instrumental in moving the
ball up the field.
The Irvine Lasers shut out their first two opponents, Albion (7-0)
and Poway Vaqueros (6-0). In the semifinals, the Lasers tied LJYSL
Impact, 1-1. In he finals, the lasers played a rematch against
Impact. This time the Lasers avenged the game with a victory, 3-0.
Haley Hite scored two goals to help her team with their third
tournament championship of the year.
AYSO Region 97
Girls under 12
Field Invaders 2, Bad News Butterflies 0: Madison Grant, Katie
Ayala, Kelsey Pearson, Page Keys and Nicole Perrier combined to take
12 shots on goal, but the girls could not connect in the net in the
loss to the Invaders. Middlebacks Sara Hamilton and Jamie Darling,
Christina Lugo, Maddy Erdossy, and Katie Gaiten provided strong
defensive support to keep the game close.
Boys under 12
Newport Stingers 5, Costa Mesa 2: The Stingers were paced led by
Ryan Cerrato with a hat trick and Arturro Navarro with two goals on
Tuesday. Also playing tough were goalkeepers Tyler Machado and Teddy
Barry . Making many strong runs on offense was Max Phillips, Kyle
Regan, Ryan Schroth, Izaak Lofgren, and Kevin Rakestraw. On defense,
Hollin Alhart, Kyle Singer, Kevin Oswalt, Ayrton Logan and Eusebio
Mendoza. Anchors on defense were sweeper Tynan Yanaga, Hollin Alhart,
Kyle Singer, Kevin Oswalt, Ayrton Logan and Eusebio Mendoza.
Newport Stingers 2, Costa Mesa 2: The Stingers received goals from
Ryan Cerrato and Arturro Navarro. Newport appeared destined for the
victory, until a last second shot eluded goalkeeper Teddy Barry. Also
strong in goal were Tyler Machado, with help from defenders Tynan
Yanaga, Kyle Singer, Kevin Oswalt, Ayrton Logan and Eusebio Mendoza.
On offense, Kyle Regan, Ryan Schroth, Max Phillips and Kevin
Rakestraw made many attacking runs. Midfield was controlled by Izaak
Lofgren and Hollin Alhart.
Girls under 10
Slimers 2, Banana Splits 0: The Slimers started the game with
strong offense played by Emma Erickson, Hanna Tucker, Kendall
Lindsay, and Alice Barry. Melissa Machuca was the star defense player
supported by Diana Fujii, Jaynie Hexberg, Jenna Lincoln, and Hailey
Oberst. Katy Butterworth played an excellent first ever soccer game.
