Big rigs make roads too dangerous
In regard to “The trucks stop here,” Sept. 1: After three
accidents involving big rigs on Newport Coast Drive, local law
enforcement officials have gotten serious about improving truck
safety.
What is it going to take for Congress to wake up to the fact that
dangerous cargoes and tractortrailers should not be on our freeways?
They should be using the railroads. One company has removed its
trucks and is using the railroads.

Mayne makes one reader’s superstar benchmark
Doug Bennett says Brent Mayne “wasn’t a superstar, but he was an
everyday player.” (“OCC names three to alumni hall of fame,” Aug. 24)
Needless to say, someone who played some 12 seasons in the major
leagues of baseball -- while he may not have established credentials
for Cooperstown -- should be accorded “superstar status” by Bennett’s
Orange Coast College Foundation.

Crystal Cove needs to be public, not private
Crystal Cove and the other state parks belong to the public and
complete public access should be the goal -- not cheap housing for
some on public property. Speaking as a frequent state park and
Crystal Cove visitor, the state park lifeguards and rangers are some
of the hardest working, most underpaid, most professional people I
have met. I trust these professionals can and will make the right
decisions on how to best preserve and manage this and other resources
we have in California.
