Organizing starts for coast cleanup

Orientation for station leaders for Coastal Cleanup Day will be held
from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Sept. 7 at the Montage Resort & Spa’s Gallery
Ballroom.
Coastal Cleanup Day, the annual statewide cleanup event sponsored
by the California Coastal Commission, will take place from 9 a.m. to
noon on Saturday, Sept. 17. Clean Water Now is organizing the event
in Laguna.
Roger von Butow of Clean Water Now says that six station leaders
are needed at Main Beach, due to the expected high attendance, and
that four station leaders will be needed at the five other cleanup
sites. Station leaders will receive T-shirts designating their
status.

Labor Day pancake breakfast benefits kids
The Laguna Beach Exchange Club, with the help of Laguna Beach
Firefighters, will again host the annual Labor Day pancake breakfast
7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Heisler Park, at Myrtle Street and Cliff
Drive. Cost is $5 per person.
Pancakes will prepared by flapjack flippers from the fire
department and served with all the trimmings. All ingredients for the
pancake breakfast are donated by the Las Brisas and Jolly Roger
restaurants, and proceeds go to programs for children and to Exchange
Club programs for the prevention of child abuse. Children’s

AARP offers driving class
AARP will offer its 55-Alive mature driving class from 9 a.m. to 5
p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10 at Lang Park, 21540 Wesley Dr. A certificate
is awarded upon completion. $10 charge. Registration information,

League of Women Voters to meet
The Laguna Beach unit of the Orange County League of Women Voters
will hold its first meeting of the new season at 9:15 a.m. Sept. 10 at the South County Meeting Room, 540 S. Coast Highway, Suite 202.
The discussion will focus on program planning for the year with
respect both to local issues and to the larger Orange County issues.

Conservancy hosts dinner, water talk
The Laguna Canyon Conservancy will hold a dinner meeting at 6 p.m.
Sept. 12. That’s the second Monday instead of the first Monday
because of the Labor Day holiday.
The topic is titled “Water, water everywhere but not a drop to
drink.” Rene Hinchey, general manager of Laguna Beach County Water
District, and Mike Dunbar, general manager of South Coast Water
District, will provide the special look at water issues and
desalinization.
The meeting will take place at Tivoli Terrace, on the Festival of
Arts grounds, 750 Laguna Canyon Rd.
Dinner tickets are $10 for members and $15 for nonmembers. The

Friends luncheon to benefit library
Mayor Elizabeth Pearson-Schneider and Laguna Beach Friends of the
Library President Martha Lydick are inviting “Ladies who Lunch...And
Read” to a luncheon Sept. 22 at Tivoli Terrace.
The luncheon is a fundraiser for the library, which has had
funding reduced due to the state’s economic problems.
Tickets are $50 each. Seating is limited to Tivoli Terrace
capacity.
Attendees are asked to submit their names and the titles and
authors of two books they have read and would recommend and be
prepared to discuss them if asked.

Historical Society to discuss Pottery Shack
The Laguna Beach Historical Society board will meet at 7 p.m.
Sept. 13 at the Murphy-Smith Bungalow, 278 Ocean Ave.
The board has invited a historical consultant on the Pottery Shack
redevelopment project to present plans for a permanent historical
exhibit to be placed at the site.

Woman’s Club to host Casino Night
The Woman’s Club of Laguna Beach will be the site of Casino Night
from 7:30 to 11 p.m. Sept. 24. Proceeds will support renovations to
the clubhouse.
Tickets are $25 per person and include $150 in chips.
