Peirsol finishes second

Newport Harbor High product Hayley Peirsol finished second in the
women’s 800-meter freestyle at the World University Games Friday in
Izmir, Turkey.
Peirsol, who will be a junior at Auburn this fall, finished in 8
minutes, 32.89 seconds, just off the pace of Great Brittain’s Becky
Cooke (8:31.43).
Camelia Potec of Romania was third in 8:33.33.
Peirsol will also swim in the 1,500 free, with preliminaries and
the final scheduled Tuesday.
This is Peirsol’s first time competing in the World University
Games.
Follmer to compete
* JET SKI RACING: Newport Beach resident Mike Follmer will attempt
to distance himself as the points leader in the American Powerboats
Association national standings when he competes in the Long Beach
Sprint Nationals today and Sunday at Marine Stadium.
Follmer, who has won 11 of 18 events this season, will be riding
his jet ski in the personal watercraft division. There will be two,
15-minute sprint races on both days scattered throughout several
circle boat races.
A five-lap qualifying event is scheduled for 11:45 a.m. both days
followed by a 10-lap final at about 2:30 p.m. Follmer said the event
could draw from 12,000 to 19,000 spectators.
Follmer also leads the Southern California Speedboat Club’s point
standings with two events remaining following this weekend’s
festivities.
Cost for adults is $10; children under 12 are free. Racing starts
at 10 a.m. both days.
Pelzel chipping in
* VOLLEYBALL: Former UC Irvine All-American Jimmy Pelzel produced
10 points, but the United States men’s volleyball team fell to
France, 25-14, 25-23, 25-27, 23-25, 15-13, in the second match of
pool play at the Summer World University Games Friday in Izmir,
Turkey.
Robert Tarr led USA with 27 points.
USA continues pool play today against China.
