Police arrest man wanted by feds
A man wanted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement was
detained by Newport Beach Police after he fought with an officer
during a traffic stop Wednesday, police said.
When the officer stopped the vehicle at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at
Seashore Drive and 35th Street, the man fled and fought with the
officer, police said.
Police used pepper spray to subdue the man. He was treated at the
scene and held at the police station on suspicion of assaulting an
officer.
The man was later released into the custody of immigration and
customs officials, whose plain-clothes officers were following the
man on suspicion of illegal entry into the country, police said.
Small fire causes JWA evacuation
A small fire at John Wayne Airport Thursday afternoon caused the
evacuation of one terminal and minor delays for two airlines. No
injuries were reported.
The fire was caused by friction on a conveyor belt where oversized
baggage and items are placed, according to airport spokeswoman Jenny
Wedge. The rubber heated up, which caused the fire.
Orange County Fire Authority responded to the scene at 3:40 p.m.
and evacuated passengers from the departure area of Terminal B, Wedge
said. By 4:20 p.m., passengers were allowed back into the airport.
Wedge said there was no reported damage to baggage. Two flights
were delayed, she said.
“Initially, there was a lot of smoke,” Wedge said. “Luckily, it
happened at a time when there wasn’t high traffic.”
