UCI names new undergraduate dean

Sharon V. Salinger, a longtime UC Riverside faculty member, has

been named UC Irvine’s new dean of undergraduate education.

Salinger replaced Meredith Lee, who retired last month after 31

years at UCI.

The new dean’s appointment was effective July 1.

During the last 25 years, Salinger has served as a faculty member

at UC Riverside, most recently as chair of the history department.

She is the author of two books, including “Taverns and Drinking in

Early America.”

As undergraduate dean, Salinger will preside over campuswide

programs and work toward developing course offerings and academic

mentoring. Her term will last five years.

“Professor Salinger demonstrates a remarkable commitment to

undergraduate education and has an exemplary record of university

service,” said executive vice chancellor Michael R. Gottfredson in a

statement. “I am extremely pleased to have her join the UCI community

and lead our stellar undergraduate education program.”

Blood drive set to begin next week

The annual Newport Beach Lifeguards Blood Drive is scheduled from

involves various Southern California Lifeguard agencies. Newport

Lifeguards have won four out of the last five competitions.

The blood drive annually provides at least 100 units of blood to

assist in lifesaving measures for 300 people in need.

The lifeguards have openings for up to 150 donors during the

six-hour window.

For more information, call (949) 644-3178. Donors need a picture

Mayor’s Award to go to fundraising couple

Costa Mesa Mayor Allan Mansoor recently announced the Mayor’s

Award for July will be given to Linda and Mike Brumbaugh, who

organized a fundraiser and raffle to help the family of Giovana Tang.

Tang, an 18-year-old Costa Mesa resident, died in a June 10 car

accident.

The fundraiser and raffle collected money to pay Tang’s funeral

expenses and create a trust for her son, who is nearly 2.

Mansoor will honor the Brumbaughs at Tuesday’s City Council

meeting, which is at 6:30 p.m. at 77 Fair Drive.
