National title won by Day

Costa Mesa High product Sharon Day, a sophomore at Cal Poly San Luis
Obispo, won the Division I women’s high jump title Saturday at the
NCAA outdoor track and field championships in Sacramento.
Day’s winning clearance of 6 feet, 4 inches was a personal and
school record. Her previous best was 6-3 1/2 .
Day defeated longtime rival Chaunte Howard from Georgia Tech who
was second at 6-1 1/4 .
In other track and field action over the weekend: Several
Newport-Mesa high school standouts produced good results at the 46th
annual Golden West invitational at Folsom High.
Corona del Mar High junior Annie St. Geme, who captured the CIF
State title in the 1,600 meters June 4, was third in the girls mile
in 4 minutes, 51 seconds.
Also in the featured evening session, Newport Harbor junior
Whitney Blue finished seventh in the girls 3,200 meters (10:36.03)
and Newport Harbor junior Bo Taylor was eighth in the discus throw
(164-10).
In the afternoon, for competitors with lesser qualifying marks,
Taylor won the shot put (56-5), while CdM senior Melissa Swigert was
second in the girls 100 in 12.10 and fourth in the 200 in 24.67.
