A man was hospitalized with multiple broken bones after jumping from
a Costa Mesa freeway overpass Thursday evening.
Witnesses reported that the man, who appeared to be in his late
30s, scaled a fence just before 6 p.m. on the 22nd Street bridge over
the Costa Mesa (55) Freeway, police said. He reportedly jumped,
without hesitation, onto the freeway below, Lt. Dave Anderson said.
The man landed in the northbound lanes of the freeway and wasn’t
hit by any cars, Anderson said.
Passing motorists on the southbound side pulled over, scaled the
center divider and pulled the man to a shoulder, Anderson said.
Paramedics arrived at the scene and took him to Western Medical
Center in Santa Ana for two broken ankles and a possible broken arm.
He was conscious and breathing at the time, Anderson said.
Police diverted northbound traffic at 19th Street and reopened the
freeway an hour later.
