Balboa Island bakery on a roll

Andrew Edwards

Cookies and cinnamon rolls are Danielle Winchell’s business. Not

doughnuts, as the surname might imply.

Cinnamon Roll Fair, a Balboa Island bakery, opened in late March.

The tiny shop is owned by Danielle and her husband Greg Winchell. It

started because Danielle needed more kitchen space to expand her

other home-based cookie company.

“I had a part-time business doing cookies, and I needed a kitchen

to expand my clientele to corporate accounts.” Danielle said. Cookie

Run, her other venture, is still up and running. Meanwhile, at

Cinnamon Roll Fair, she Danielle handles all the baking duties, a

task she’s enjoyed since she was nine.

Though they live in Huntington Beach, the Winchells chose to open

their bakery on Balboa Island. . “We were looking for a resort area

that had a lot of tourist clientele,” DaniellesaidLike many of the

shops that line Marine Avenue, Cinnamon Roll Fair is kind of on the

small side. The Winchells’ bakery seems to have barely enough room

for display racks, baking equipment, supplies and Kirsten Jamieson,

the couple’s sole employee.

The bakery can get crowded in the morning, Danielle said with a

laugh.

She plans for Cinnamon Roll Fair to grow into a three-store chain.

She wants to open new bakeries in Huntington Beach and Seal Beach,

but keep the chain small enough so she can manage the company

herself.

The bakery’s selection includes cinnamon pastry twists, chocolate

chip and peanut butter cookies, and chocolate croissants.

So far, the best-selling item is the bakery’s namesake pastry,

Jamieson said.

“Cinnamon rolls are the most popular ones, I think. By far

actually,” Jamieson said.

Cinnamon Roll Fair is at 220 Marine Ave., Balboa Island.
