Alexa Boyer and twin sister Grace were a key in the Mariners
Christian Elementary offense, but it was Adams that finished on top
with a 5-2 victory in the third- and fourth-grade girls Gold Division
Wednesday in the second round of pool-play in the Daily Pilot Cup at
Costa Mesa Farm Complex.
Within minutes of the first half, Alexa Boyer and Grace Boyer
powered their way past defenders, and Alexa scored a goal with an
assist from Grace, putting Mariners Christian up, 1-0.
Adams tried to tie the score with four consecutive attempts, which
were all saved by Mariners Christian goalie Brittney Alayra.
After a foul was called on Mariners Christian, Adams’ Angelina
Fryburger was given a penalty kick, and tied the score at 1.
The sister-duo answered back with a goal, which was scored by
Alexa Boyer and assisted by Grace Boyer.
Adams returned with a goal to end the first half tied at 2.
In the second half, Stephanie Madrigal lit up the field with
back-to-back goals, putting Adams up, 4-2.
Late in the second half, Adams scored a goal after a fastbreak led
Genesis Guevara to assist in a goal by Shantel Romero, which ended
the game, 5-2.
Jon Gruber, who is the Adams coach, praised his teams efforts.
“I’m just happy to be helping out. They had a lot of fun and they
had good team effort,” Gruber said.
Despite the loss, Mariners Christian Coach Jim Kraushaar walked
away pleased.
“They gave a great effort,” Kraushaar said. “Their attitude was
great, even when they were down. They kept great spirit throughout
the game.”
Mariners Christian faces OLQA today while Adams plays Newport
Elementary.
