Coast claims opener

Orange Coast College sophomore shortstop Chris Klein went 4 for 4 to
lead the Pirates to a 7-4 baseball victory over visiting San
Bernardino Valley Saturday to open a best-of-three Southern
California regional series.
OCC can advance with one win today. The first game is scheduled at
11 a.m. at OCC, with a deciding game, if needed, 30 minutes after the
conclusion of the first.
Cline, a two-time All-Orange Empire Conference performer, reached
all five plate appearances. He also had 10 errorless chances at short
to back a strong pitching performance by three Pirates.
Starter Kyle Hogue allowed one earned run and eight hits in 6 2/3
innings.
Freshman Justin Peterson, a Costa Mesa High product, closed out
the seventh, before Mark Haderlein pitched two perfect innings to
record his first save of the season.
After OCC (25-14) scored one in the second, it posted four in the
second to take control of the contest.
The winner of this series advances to the super regionals,
beginning Saturday.

Sage Hill advances
* TENNIS: Sophomore Martin Park swept his sets to lead the Sage
Hill School boys tennis team to a 15-3 CIF Southern Section Division
V second-round victory at Beaumont Saturday.
Park, at the No. 2 singles position, only lost one game to win,
6-0, 6-1, 6-0, for the Lightning (16-7), who advance to the
quarterfinals against an opponent and site to be determined.
Sophomore Robert Wee also swept his sets at No. 3 singles,
winning, 6-4, 7-5, 6-2, while the duo of junior Michael Garrison and
sophomore Conrad Whitaker swept at No. 1 doubles, 6-4, 7-6, 6-1, for
Sage, which reached the quarterfinals last year. A quarterfinal win
Tuesday would be the first in the school’s history in boys tennis.
Beerer hammers field
* TRACK AND FIELD: UC Irvine junior Mike Beerer won the hammer
throw with a toss of 204 feet, 11 inches to highlight Anteater
competitors at the Big West Conference track and field championships
completed Saturday at UCI.
Beerer’s toss, on his final throw of the competition, was the
second best in school annals.
Dayne Comrie was second in the 400 meters (48.43 seconds), while
Tom Whelan and Ricky Barnes, as well as Julian Eison finished third
in their respective events to help the Anteaters finish seventh as a
team.
Whelan clocked a time of 1:52.24 in the 800 meters, while Barnes
ran the 1,500 in 3:47.15 and Eison cleared 6-10 3/4 in the high
jump.
The men’s 1,600 relay of Storm Huie, Scott Jarvis, Michael
McEachon and Comrie finished second in 3:12.50.
The UCI women finished ninth, with senior Suzanne Purmort posting
the top individual finish (fifth in the 400 hurdles in 1:02.80).
Kirsten Loftin was seventh in the pole vault (11-5 3/4 ) for the
Anteaters.
Orlisha Henlon (25.23 in the 200) and Kristen Silverman (15.54 in
the 100 hurdles), as well as Candice Proctor (17:37.51 in the 5,000)
all finished eighth for the Anteaters.
UCI men eliminated
* TENNIS: The UC Irvine men’s tennis team saw its season end as
eighth-seeded Pepperdine remained undefeated at home this season with
a 4-0 victory over the Anteaters in the opening round of the NCAA
championships Saturday.
The Waves (22-2) claimed doubles matches at the No. 1 and No. 3
slots to win the point. Scott Doerner and Pedro Rico defeated UCI
seniors Brian Morton and Rye Kashiwabara, 8-2. Kevin Borzenski and
Richard Johnson then defeated junior Peter Surapol and freshman
Victor Lamm, 8-1. Morton and teammate Mustafa Ulukan each lost their
singles sets, 6-2, 6-1, for UCI (14-9).
