JIM DE BOOM
If you are between 21 and 40 years old, you should consider joining
the Newport Beach Jaycees.
Jaycees member Lisa Biason e-mailed a copy of “Think Tank,” the
Jaycees newsletter, to me recently and I have to say I was impressed
with the 10-page publication. In addition to the notice of a meeting
with local entrepreneur Jim Roberts at 7 p.m. Wednesday, it contains
informative articles on retirement planning by Autumn Chavez, “Five
Steps to Successful Networking” by Cindy Chernow, “Globalization 101”
by Anna Lisa Biason, and “Creating a Sales and Marketing Strategy” by
Terry Elliott.
The Newport Jaycees are part of Junior Chamber International, a
worldwide organization with more than 200,000 members around the
world.

ADOPT A SOCIAL WORKER
One way that service clubs help the community is by adopting a
social worker from the Center for Child Abuse Prevention. The
Exchange Club of the Orange Coast adopted social worker Sherry Jensen
at a recent meeting.
The club had given her a $250 check the last time she came to a
club meeting. She reported that she had to use part of it to purchase
a double stroller for a mother who had been trying to carry her two
children everywhere. Jensen used some of the money to purchase tape
recorders and bus tokens for parents.
Recently, Exchange Club members Herb Voss and Ed Kohlmeier brought
in food, toys and books for Jensen to share with families.
“When you hear Sherry talk about the families she works with,
especially the children, it makes our job of fundraising that much
more meaningful,” Kohlmeier said.
MEMBERSHIP LUNCHEON
The Kiwanis Club of Costa Mesa is holding an open house luncheon
reception at noon on Thursday at the Holiday Inn. Learn firsthand
about Kiwanis in the community, meet members and hear them share
about the club’s “give back” philosophy. The speaker will be Costa
Mesa Police Chief John Hensley.
RSVPs are required by Monday to Joe Panarisi at (714) 557-7733.
STAMPS.COM BEWARE
If you get one of those pesky telephone solicitations from
Stamps.com, be aware that their customer service is not anywhere near
that of Nordstrom’s. Even if you sign up for the trial period and
don’t end up using the service, there are no refunds once they charge
your credit card.
I will stick with Pitney Bowes, which has good customer service.
WORTH REPEATING
Thought for today, provided by Greg Kelley of the Newport Mesa
Irvine Interfaith Council: “The world is a dangerous place to live,
not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who
don’t do anything about it.”
-- ALBERT EINSTEIN
