Beerer tops host of UCI standouts

UC Irvine junior Mike Beerer won the hammer throw with a mark of 202
feet, 1 inch in the Oxy invitational Saturday at Occidental College
as he improved on his second-best mark in Anteater history.
Senior Andrew Garratt finished third in the 1,500 meters in 3
minutes, 54.80 seconds.
Senior Kenny Vinh was third in the 110 high hurdles (14.89), while
juniors Aaron Corbett (15-7) and Michael Cao (15-1 1/4 ) placed third
and fourth, respectively, in the pole vault.
Junior Ian Connell was fourth in the discus throw (154-0) and
senior Joe Lourenco finished fifth in the long jump (22-1 3/4 ).
The Anteaters’ 400 relay won in a season-best 41.57, while the
1,600 relay was second in a season-best clocking of 3:11.82.
For the women, senior Kim Ramirez finished sixth in the 800 with a
time of 2:10.13 as she entered UCI’s Top 10 career list at ninth.
Sophomore Kristen Silverman finished fifth in the 100 hurdles with a season-best time of 15.05 and senior Lauren Adams placed sixth in
the 400 meters (59.36).
UCI ran season-best times of 3:49.52 in the 1,600 relay and 47.76
in the 400 relay, finishing first and second, respectively.
In action at the Northridge open Saturday, UCI sophomore Erricka
Williams won the triple jump (37-7 1/4 ), while sophomore teammate
Adonica Shaw was third (36-5 3/4 ).
In men’s action at the same meet, junior John Wratten won the high
jump (6-6 3/4 ) and senior Patrick Grogan was second in the triple
jump (46-1 1/4 ).
The Big West Conference championships are scheduled Wednesday
through Saturday at Anteater Stadium.
Zoelle garners honors
* SOFTBALL: Former Corona del Mar High standout Alissa Zoelle has
been named to the JuCal Transfer all-state softball team following
her season at Santa Ana College.
Zoelle, a four-time first-team All-Pacific Coast League selection
at CdM, finished with the fourth-highest batting average (.408) in
Dons’ history with 40 hits in 78 at-bats.
She tallied 17 RBIs, 16 runs, nine doubles and two triples to earn
first-team All-Orange Empire Conference recognition for Santa Ana,
which finished 20-19, 8-10 in conference.
Zoelle, who graduated from CdM in June of 2003, started the
following fall at Fresno State. But she decided the school wasn’t for
her and transferred.
Erickson earns tryout
* BASEBALL: UC Irvine sophomore All-American closer Blair Erickson
has been invited to participate in the 2005 USA Baseball national
team trials, June 27-30 in Raleigh, N.C.
This is Erickson’s second invitation to the trials. He
participated in 2004 when he became one of the nation’s top closers.
Heading into today’s scheduled game at the University of the
Pacific, the right-hander is 1-2 with a 1.27 ERA this spring. He has
40 strikeouts in 28 1/3 innings and eight saves. Erickson has
surrendered only 12 hits.
The USA Baseball national team will participate in the 34th Annual
USA vs. Japan collegiate championship series, held July 8-12 in
Japan. The Americans will also play in a Friendship Series against
Taiwan, July 15-19 in Chinese Taipei.
The team will then return home to play six exhibition games at
Durham Bulls Athletic Park, July 22-24 and July 29-31.
Anteaters rained out
* BASEBALL: Sunday’s scheduled Big West Conference baseball game
between visiting UC Irvine and the University of the Pacific was
rained out and rescheduled for today at 1 p.m.
The three-game series is even after UCI earned an 8-6 victory
Saturday.
Coach Dave Serrano’s Anteaters are 25-19, 7-7 in the Big West,
trying to stay within striking distance of the top three in the
standings and battle UC Riverside for fourth place.
UC Riverside (6-6 in conference) played a nonconference series
this weekend against UC Davis.
Pirates’ Nguyen 7th
* BADMINTON: Orange Coast College sophomore Nora Nguyen finished
seventh Friday at the Orange Empire Conference women’s badminton
singles championships at Santa Ana College.
Nguyen, the No. 7 seed, won twice to advance to the quarterfinals,
before falling to Yuki Nakagawa of Irvine Valley, 11-5, 11-3.
Nguyen lost in the fifth-place semifinal, 11-5, 8-11, 11-6, to
Helen Phung from San Diego City, before topping Becky Tran of
Fullerton, 11-5, in the seventh-place final.
Tars’ Clayton advances
* TRACK AND FIELD: Newport Harbor High sophomore Laura Clayton
finished third in the triple jump at Friday night’s Sea View League
track and field championships at Irvine High.
With her mark of 34 feet, 8 1/2 inches, Clayton earns a berth in
the CIF Southern Section Division II preliminaries Saturday at
Moorpark High.
