The Costa Mesa Firefighters Association held their fifth annual

charity golf tournament April 18 at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in

Mission Viejo.

J.R. Richardson, Steve Robles, Chuck Speigel and Craig Johns from

Wilson Creek Winery took first place with a 56 while Zach Jones,

Steve Card, David Gronsky and Sherwin NG from the Bristol Farms Group

placed second at 57.

Dominick Sarno, Chris Barilla, Kyle Romney and Doug Marlowe of The

Lending Company finished third after carding a 57, but lost to the

aforementioned quartet in a tiebreaker.

Lois Adams, Sheri Wilson, Jane Adams and Debbie Adams claimed the

ladies division title.

Jones claimed the long-drive title with a blast of 288 yards into

a 20-mph headwind.

Ryan Bumgarner was one of four golfers who had a shot for $100,000

if he made a hole-in-one after the helicopter ball drop. He missed by

only inches.

The tournament raised an estimated $16,709, twice as much as the

event has generated, tournament director Keith Jones said.

Registration is under way for the 10th annual California Women’s

State Championship, scheduled July 18-20 at the Pacific Palms Resort

(Eisenhower Course) in the City of Industry.

The 54-hole stroke-play championship is open to all female

amateurs -- without age restrictions -- whose primary residence is

California. The event will determine who will represent California in

the United States Golf Association team matches held every other

year.

Eligibility is limited to the lowest 100 qualified applicants

whose USGA handicap doesn’t exceed 10.4.

Cost is $225 per player and includes range balls, three days worth

of green fees, three days shared cart rental -- the fee is mandatory,

but competitors may walk, a players’ reception July 18 and awards

ceremony July 20.

Entries close June 18. Players may bring their own caddies.

A 59, that nearly elusive score for professional golfers, won

Vanguard University’s sixth annual Executive Leadership Golf

Tournament on Monday at Mesa Verde Country Club.

The team of Jeff Miller, Mike Roberts, Don Barreson and Rick

Sanders carded the score in the scramble format, which mandated that

teams use at least two drives from each player.

Second place went to a card-off between two teams that scored 60.

The team of Dave Simkin, Morgan Anderson, Scott Monson and Jim

Keickhafer took second place.

Tom Anderson, Wing Lam, Terrence Wilborn and Jason Wilborn teamed

to place third.

Tom Anderson also won the closest to the pin contest on the club’s

12th hole, a par 3 over water.

Stu Batty claimed the men’s long drive contest, on the 10th hole.

Kathie Bloomfield won the women’s long drive, on the first hole.

The invitational event is put on by the university’s Professional

Leadership Circle and raises several thousand dollars for university

scholarships, said Dave Elliot, director of university relations.

As an invitation-only event with about 90 golfers, its purpose is

more about giving college supporters the chance to interact than

about intense fundraising, he added.
