The basketball teams at Mesa View and Marine View middle schools each
won two postseason championships in boys’ and girls’ basketball
action at the Ocean View School District tournament last week.
Below is a breakdown of each division final:
Eighth-grade girls
Mesa View 27, Marine View 24
Mesa View, which had not won a district crown in six years, upset
a Marine View squad that entered the tournament undefeated.
The Eagles overcame an early 6-1 deficit to earn a 17-17 tie at
the half.
They went into the lead in the third quarter behind the play of
Mariah Nogueira and Samantha Meisenholder, who keyed a defensive
effort that shut out the Mariners in the quarter.
Nogueira scored 16 points and Jalyssa Brown had 10 rebounds for
Mesa View.
“Mariah Nogueira is the finest all-around female athlete I’ve seen
in my 31 years in the district,” Mesa View Coach Kelly Painter said.
“I’m looking forward to reading about her in a couple of years.”
Eighth-grade boys
Marine View 34, Spring View 26
Marine View faced the tall task of taking on an undefeated Spring
View team that featured twin towers Travis and David Wear, but came
up with a big win.
“We knew we were at a disadvantage, so we tried to slow the game
down to our pace,” Marine View coach Andy Becker said.
The Mariners did indeed slow the pace, as the two teams were
locked at 8-8 at halftime. They were led in the second half by Neil
Negrete, who scored 18 points and had 10 rebounds.
Teammates Tab Pagter and Nick Nesser each scored four points.
Travis Wear scored 16 points, David Wear scored six and Tyler
Rinker contributed four more for Spring View.
Seventh-grade girls
Marine View 35, Mesa View 19
Marine View, which went through the regular season unscathed,
continued to master its opponents in postseason play, culminating
with this win in the division final.
Janet Kim scored 10 points and had five assists, Analese Treyo
scored 10 points and had 11 rebounds and Megan White had eight
assists and seven rebounds as the Mariners broke open a tight game.
